Mr. Chaib receives the Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Inter-Parliamentary Assembly

Mr. Sofiane Chaib, Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of the National Community Abroad, received Mr. Chem Widhya, Secretary-General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), today at the Ministry’s headquarters. This meeting took place within the framework of Mr. Widhya’s working visit to Algeria—the first of its kind since the National People's Assembly joined the Assembly as an observer parliament about a year ago.

The Secretary of State began the meeting by congratulating the organization's Secretary-General on assuming his duties earlier this year. He emphasized the importance of further strengthening cooperation between the two sides in the coming period, both regarding bilateral relations with ASEAN member states and within multilateral frameworks.

The meeting provided an opportunity to review Algeria's relations with the Southeast Asian region and ways to enhance them, particularly in light of recent developments. These include Algeria’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in July 2024—with the support of all ASEAN member states—and the National People's Assembly’s joining of the AIPA as an observer parliament.

Both sides also underscored the importance of continued joint efforts to strengthen frameworks for exchange and consultation, develop mechanisms for coordination and dialogue, and leverage the parliamentary dimension to foster closer ties between Algeria and ASEAN nations. Such efforts aim to open broader horizons for cooperation across various areas of mutual interest and contribute to the goals of peace, stability, development, and cooperation among peoples.
